A Novel...Written by: Peggy Lee Nichols
Maggie didn't care if she saw her 'Granny' any ole way! She had her Mommy and Aunt Shury and Kathy. She smiled as she thought of Kathy's daddy too...He was the handsomest man she believed she had ever seen! Aunt Shury told her..He'd had it rough too...but He always had a smile for her and Kathy.. The girls started skipping and laughing as they joined the others walking to school. All thoughts of that mean ole boy put aside for now...
Son of a gun! She had to watch her big mouth when she was around the girls and Ellen, for that matter! Nobody heard her almost say just the oppisite anyway! Aunt Shury smiled a sneaky grin. But...Gosh all mighty! That mean ole boy made her temper rise up like a bucket of hot coals! Shoot! The whole dang family of those Mullins' did that to her! The ornery bunch! Such goings on with that family..she never heard the beat in all her life! None of your business Shury..she scolded herself as the rants and raves of her temper were settling down. There usually was always at least one rotten APPLE in a a bushel! Trouble was, there didn't seem to be one Mullen that was even ripe for pickin'! Seems they put the fear in anyone that looked their way! But NOT ME! I ain't sceared of nooo body! Y'all better know not to mess with me! You incompoots! Shury pondered... She was a very "common sense" woman. Oh, she came across as a rough talking person with her intelligence hidden in her approach. But underneath the exterior of guarded emotions, was a heart of gold for those she cared for. Not the ideal woman of a man's dreams, but then...no man had taken a closer 'look' at her either. Tall with hair the color of autumn leaves and eyes green as jade, she didn't recognize her beauty.
Wearing clothes that seemed to be two sizes too big for her, she hid her nice figure too. In her early thirty's, it were as if she wanted everyone to think she was older. She didn' care..she didn't want no man telling her what to do! She'd seen enough of that in her lifetime! The only men she cared about was Clifford, Kathy's daddy and Charlie..Maggie's daddy. She thought the world of Charlie. She claimed to be his cousin, but he would just smile and say nothing when she would mention the fact. Shoot! She needed to get home and get her work done! She turned as she watched the girls disappear up the holler towards the school. Walking with a brisk stride, she stopped by the Company Store before going home. Children walked a long way to school every day. It sat on the side of that mountain with steps leading up to the door. Maggie and Kathy tried to count them once, but gave up after they reached ninety! They had all the children laughing along with them as they giggled their way inside the school. There were two classrooms on each floor of the two story building. And two grades in each room. The teacher Mrs. Weakly held a stern hand with the students. Maggie didn't have any problems with her, but she couldn't help feel a little sorry for those who were punished, with that paddle of hers. Maggie tried to avoid looking at Johnny every day, but today she tried harder. As she took her seat at her desk, she heard him chuckle a low mean laugh behind her as she tensed in fear. Then it happened...Mrs. Weakly always started the day with the pledge of alligence, then the roll call. Just as she said Kathy's name, there was a scream shattering the room! The teacher looked sharply at Maggie and saw the tears on her face.
