| Alcohol Sales Helping Some Western Kentucky Towns By: Ryan Tate WESTERN KENTUCKY --Lyon County residents turned down an alcohol ordinance Tuesday, but some Western Kentucky towns have booze flowing in some of its restaurants. One of those is Kuttawa, an oasis in Lyon County. "We were losing big everyday to Paducah, and our clientel was looking for a place to eat, and have a drink with their meal," Hampton Inn General Manager Norma Powers said. But Kuttaw has company with Murray. The Calloway County town passed a "restaurant by the drink" ordinance more than three years ago. "We feel it's added a new retail trade here, more attractions for people, and it helped other businesses in town," City Administrator Don Elias said. Murray charges businesses who sell alcohol an 8% fee on alcohol sales. Elias says that generates more than $100,000 a year. |
