| Two southcentral Kentucky counties with a reputation of prohibiting alcohol sales have a higher rate of DUI arrests per capita than Warren County. Both Simpson and Butler counties had a higher rate of people arrested in 1999 on DUI charges than other southcentral Kentucky counties, including Warren and Logan counties where alcohol sales are legal. The numbers of DUI arrests are taken from the latest Crime in Kentucky report, compiled by Kentucky State Police. The report is a statewide listing of arrests and reported crimes broken down into cities and counties. The rate of DUI arrests was gathered by comparing the 2000 U.S. Census population to the total number of DUI arrests in each southcentral Kentucky county during 1999. Simpson County tops the list with 278 arrests, or one person out of every 59, in a population of 16,405, according to the report. Following is Butler County with 184 arrests, or one in every 70 county residents, according to the report. Both Simpson and Butler county are considered dry counties, where sales of alcohol by the drink and by the package are prohibited by law. |
