Glade Valley School was the very best during its time. Dr. Bob Chilton was so very inspirational and of great vision. GVHS had a lot of faults due to the times, but, in my opinion, the early 70's were the best. I had a lot of fun teaching and doing the other assignments. Wish more like Gary, F.M., and Zeke would respond. They were the absolute best. Oh yea, you just had to have a "scatcake", eh, guys. After the early years of the '60s, Glade Valley became a foreign place to me. The changes were so drastic and dramatic, it was unbelievable. The one constant in all of the changes has been Miss Anne B. Corry, Dean of Women and the little Church of Glade V lley. Miss Corry's goal has been to have the history of GVS in print, and thank God she is going to be able to have a copy in her hands soon. My project will be a page for the classes from the beginning to the mid 60's and it will be dedicated to this wom n who gave so much of herself to so many. God Blessed me when He put me in her hands even though I fought and kicked at the traces when He did. Part of who I am today is because of her and the many dedicated men and women who gave so much to forming and m lding the young students that came to GVS for many different reasons and different States. Guess what, everybody? I attended the GV reunion on Sept. 12th and 13th! It was so great, I want you to know. Our school was always a special place. I met folks from the classes of the 1940s-60s. Let me tell you the school was always for kids from br ken homes or difficult situations, although it was also for those seeking a specifically Christian education. The spiritual dimension of Glade Valley's magic comes not just from the beautiful quartz-laden land and flowing waters...it comes also from thos who came before us, the ones who made up the fabric of the cloak that we all wore. We prayed en masse for Glade Valley to reopen as it was, for more kids to come there and grow. I can say that our extracurricular activities in the 70s and 80s were a li tle more daring than anything the older classes experienced. However, I was assured that kids were still acting crazy then, and I met plenty who'd gotten expelled. It's very reassuring to hear someone say that who is now 50 or 60 and say to myself,"He's one of us!" The school is an absolute mess, all molded and plaster falling down. We had all the buildings open and I found lots of graffiti that I and my friends had scribbled on the walls of our rooms and on the tops of the heating vents against the cl ssroom walls where we sat bored at our desks. I particularly liked seeing the "One day til the Dead show" that my boyfriend at the time had written in one class, as that was my first Grateful Dead show that he was counting down to. Did you know there wa a beautiful wooden Victorian style dorm that burned down? It was where the athletic field is. I got the firsthand account. You know someone was using the lefthand boys' dorm as a barn recently? Hay is everywhere, and ppeople have been really vandaliz ng, in totally nonartistic ways, as in spitting tobacco juice all over the walls and breaking windows. PEOPLE, WHATEVER IT TAKES, WE HAVE GOT TO GET OUR HANDS ON HTAT PROPERTY AND RECLAIM IT BEFORE SOME DEVELOPER DOES. IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT TO HAPPEN? T E LAND IS FOR SALE AND WE ALUMNI ARE PRAYING AND ORGANIZING IN A SERIOUS WAY TO SEE THIS HAPPEN. WE NEED ALL THE HELP WE CAN GET! I'LL KEEP YOU POSTED! Love and Peace!

Greetings, It was good to see you guys (Carrie, Kelly, C.D., and Jan) in Hatteras this past weekend. We still seem like the same old partiers even after all these years!! I can't make it to the reunion this September, because of a previous engagement (an Allman Br thers show that day!), but I'll definitely make it to the one in 2000 if it happens. I've been looking for this site since May, but no search turned it up. I've been researching answers to why the school closed and why itsdemise was so troubling. My goal is to see Glade Valley open again, as legendary as it was, with a service-learning g obally-focused program. I'm clearly the youngest alumnus on your list, and I'd really like to meet the folks who created the legends. Did you have Fairy Land? What about aminitas? Any jimson seed incidents? Does this sound familiar? I'd love to coll ct stories about the wild times we've had, names obscured to protect the innocent. I've got the benefit of a copyright lawyer friend who is from Sparta to help me in this vein. I've been meeting plenty of people from there, and plan to visit with Dr. Fr sier (the pastor) soon. I am in touch with Sean Morgan (Leaf Berserkerer) here in Asheville after seeing him at a couple of Grateful Dead concerts in the 80s then reunited after 10 years. I'm interested in knowing how many other Deadheads came out of GVS There are a few more, plus a counseler, with whom I've remained in touch. I've also been in contact with a board member in Winston and some folks at the Presbyterian archives at Montreat. I'm trying to find out what closed the school, but I'm not tryin to slander anyone. I just want to preserve the memory and perhaps renew the magic. It was just as magic in 1984-85 as it was when you were there. In fact, Glade Valley School changed my life. Peace.

Was just at GV today (8/6/98). The condition of the old place is very sad. The caretaker, Pete, said that at least 30 former students had stopped by this summer alone.
