| Open Floor/Dialogue: During an open session of question/answer dialogue, Sharma addressed a number of issues relating to the balancing of the two pillars. The following is an abbreviated list of issues discussed: Africas predicament and foreign investment vis a vis the East Asian markets The importance of dialogue with in the GA Different types of globalization protesters and their importance in the development of the international systems. US Citizens and policy and the dichotomy b/n the lost country and the UN. The (non)accountability of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. Terrorism and a changing paradigm in security. Analysis and Conclusion The main question to be asked in the wake of this insightful conversation is Is he right? In the final analysis, Ambassador Sharma is right in believing that there are a particular set of base needs that require fulfillment in order to reach higher goals. Job creation sets the stage for higher goals to be reached; providing a means for individuals to move away from the fringe and into the mainstream of society, granting increased access to the market, food, healthcare etc., these in turn promote an essential human dignity. The balance between the two pillars is an important one. The two are not mutually exclusive, but one should be treated with grater importance, for it supports, in every way, the other. The role of social and economic development should be elevated. |
