Gordon's Expedition to the Rub Al Khali (the
Empty Quarter, one of the largest deserts in the
world)
Dec 30-Jan 5, 2001
Base camp in the dunes of the Empty Quarter, in the western corner of the UAE where it meets Oman and Saudi Arabia.  The colors and shadows change out here by the hour. The solitude is immense!
Gordon and his hiking partner, Marius Van Sckalkwyk.  They devised these "sand sleds" as a way to carry 60 pounds of water apiece. Do the sleds look familiar?  They used  cut-down plastic garbage cans!
Below, Gordon hikes up one of the many 500 foot dunes in the Empty Quarter. They did a circle tour, hiking and camping there for 6 days.
Red sands everywhere. Marius'  Galloper proved to be a trusty 4X4 that handled  the tricky art of dune-driving.
So what do you do when you've got 500-foot dunes to play on in the desert????
Jump off and fly, of course!  Wheeeeeeee!
