| My biggest concern when towing was the visibility of the traffic behind the caravan, as the outside mirrors or not of much help. I found most rear view mirrors do not really give a good view of what is going on behind the caravan. To get a better view I used to move a bit to the left of the road and then back, and in doing so found that I could determine what traffic,if any, was behind me and then decide if the yellow line was clear ahead to pull over and let the traffic pass. In essence this is dangerous as the vehicle behind me have thought that I was moving over into the yellow line the first time in order for him to pass. Often, when I moved back into his path again, the following motorist became frustrated. I also found that the extension mirrors vibrated to such an extend that one cannot see clearly or as much as you would like to anyway. To make matters worse the caravan manufacturers decided to complicate the issue by not equipping certain caravan models with a rear window. Admittedly this also only helped if one was lucky enough to have a high towing vehicle like a 4X4 or minibus. I decided that an alternative solution to this problem must be found, and this is what I have developed. I installed a special removable camera to the back of the caravan, and wired it with connector plugs to the A-frame at the front of the caravan. From there a connection wire was installed to the car's dashboard and LCD video monitor. The connection between the car and caravan is removable and works on the same principle as the caravan connection, making it easy to remove after towing. The camera does give a 180 degree rear view vision, no shaking and a great deal of satisfaction. I can tow in the normal driving lane and when a vehicle approaches from a distance of about 30 to 40 meters, I have enough time to move over, if safe, allowing the vehicle to pass. This also reduce the risk of picking up a flat tyre when permanently driving in the emergency lane and risking picking up all the debris that can litter our roadside. Apart from this advantage, it makes caravaning much safer and relieves the stress of towing, taking the frustration off fellow motorists and allow caravaning to become a pleasure and wonderful experience as it was intended to be. This solution works out cheaper than installing a rear window in the caravan, wich I anyway could not use to its full affect as I am towing with a normal sedan. |
