| This is no time to lapse in concentration, for with the Leys, it has emerged that sibness is almost as inextricable as their Gordon o' Girnoc counterparts! Girls must always go first, and indeed, here Mary Leys presents a gentler introduction: Mary Leys (1808-1889) was the fifth daughter of Charles Leys and May/Marjory Fleming (Family Group One - return to section 4.) So who was the John Leys that Mary married in mid-March 1831? Furthermore what (if any) was the relationship between John and his new bride? The well trod trek to Crathie graveyard was to be, in this regard, a most fruitful journey. For the third in a row of eight Leys memorials was one erected in remembrance of John and Mary Leys: Crathie tombstone: Erected by GEORGE HANTON to the memory of MARGARET LEYS his sister-in-law d Pannanich 22 June 1897 aged 56; her father JOHN LEYS d. Longhaven, Glengairn 27 July 1891 aged 87. His wife MARY LEYS d. there 25 July 1889 aged 80; their son CHARLES d. Inver, Crathie 20 March 1856 aged 24. So it was confirmed from the tombstone that John Leys was born circa 1804 and died in 1891 aged 87 years. Register House provided his death certificate and a surprise: an unfamiliar 'set' of parents: John Leys (crofter) and Janet Riach. John Leys Woolen Weaver - Widower of Mary Leys Died 27th July 1891 at 6.30pm Age: 87yrs At Loinahaven, Glengairn Father: John Leys (D) - Crofter Mother: Janet Leys m.s. Riach (D) Death cause: Paralysis & General Debility (no regular medical attendant) Informant: George Hanton4, son-in-law (Easter Pannanich, Glenmuick) It was at this stage the trail to John virtually petered out. No IGI marriage for his parents: John Leys and Janet Riach could be found. However there was an IGI entry to the birth of John Leys as follows. The original parish record may contain further clues: JOHN LEYS Born: 29th January 1805 Christened: 30th January 1805, Glenmuick Father: John Leys So unfortunately very few clues survive to the origins of the John Leys to whom Janet Riach bore son John in 1805. It would be fair to speculate that this John Leys MUST have some relationship to Charles Leys (Head of family group 1). One candidate emerges (based no more on dates) and that is a John Leys who was born in 1785, the son of Alexander Leys and Mary Gordon (christened a son John Ley on the17th June 1785.) Was this John Ley?- it should be noted that this is simply speculation on the writer's behalf. The central question however remains: Did John Leys marry his cousin Mary Leys? Given the naming patterns this seems more likely than not - no solid proof though has emerged. It is hoped that the original parish records or census returns may answer this!
