GORDONS in CRATHIE and GLENMUICK
By J.M. BULLOCH - The Huntly Express, December 1908

Although the Gordons of Abergeldie are still a power as landowners in Upper Deeside, where they have been lairds to the Royal family for many a long year, we associate the region with other surnames, notably that of Farquharson. Time was, however, when the Abergeldie family  were not the only big owners of the name of Gordon as they are today. The Earls of Huntly were a power, with the Abergeldie Gordons a branch of their family.

Besides these there had long been a series of tenants or yeoman families, several of which exist to our own day. As they only rented the land, however, it is rather difficult to trace their relationships. The chief groups have been those connected with ARDMEANACH, AUCHALLATER, AUCHOLZIE, BOVAGLE, CAMLET, CRATHIENAIRD and LITTLEMILL, to say nothing of the extinct Gordons of BRAICKLEY, who live on in our memories by reason of a well known ballad.

When the 'House of Gordon' was begun with ardour, by the New Spalding Club five years ago, Abergeldie took the premier place, and an appendix sketched some of the minor families - most imperfectly. At the time a
Mr David Stewart Ramsay Gordon was also working at the subject. Having made good competence in Chili, he had returned more Scots than ever to the land of his birth, feverishly enthusiastic on tracing his origins.

To effect this admirable purpose D.S.R. Gordon - it keeps a man going in his middle ages - ransacked Parish registers, spent many days over tombstones in churchyards of the countryside, and resided for weeks at Ballater, where his burly figure in the Gordon tartan kilt was a familiar sight. And then he died - leaving notebooks bulged with patient notes. His only son Dr Reginald Gordon, courteously permitted me to see these notes. The experience was quite usual, for I discovered that he had failed to indicate which parish registers he had examined. It was only by following the place-names, that I was able to trace his footsteps; and I now present his work, sifted and arranged, because for the present, there is no chance of anyone else going at the trouble or expense of having these registers re-transcribed.

Some generalisations may be made on the data thus presented. In the first place, I may note the frequent use of the Christian name of Samuel, which, popular amongst the Gordons of Galloway, has rarely been much used by the northern septs. Another obvious fact is that the Gordons on Upper Deeside married into families, which fish-boned, as it were, into the adjoining counties, setting up branches in Kincardine and Forfar, and, on the other side, in Strathdon. It would also seem as if some of these Ballater-to-Braemar Gordons started life with other surnames, for they are sometimes distinguished with an alias of Celtic character.

I have added some additional notes (marked with *), including a few from the unpublished register, kept by the priests at Braemar. On some future occasion I hope to co-ordinate these notes on some families represented.
