Report on the Ancestry of PETER GORDON
Who died at Altyre, Rafford

Report Written 22nd of October 1965 for Janet Risk Gordon

Peter Gordon was found to have died on the 15th May 1899  at Blairs of Altyre, Rafford County, Elgin. He was described in his death entry as shepherd aged 60 married to Euphemia Ferguson, and the son of
John Gordon, farmer and Ann Selbie. The information for his death entry was given by his son John Gordon of 5 Temple gardens, Crewe Road, Glasgow.

The general index of marriages in Scotland was then searched from 1855 to 1865 for the marriage of Peter Gordon and Euphemia Ferguson, but this entry was not found. The 1851 and 1861 Census schedules for Flisk, Fife and the 1891 Census Schedules for Rafford were next consulted, but Peter Gordon was not found to have been living at either place at these dates.

The general index of births in Scotland was then searched from 1861 to 1865 for the births of any children of Peter Gordon and Euphemia Ferguson at Flisk, Fife, but no relevant entries were found.

Annie Selbie or Gordon was then found to have died on the 18th of November 1902 at Glentarkie Farm, Parish of Abernethy, Perthshire. According to her death entry she was then aged 84 the widow of John Gordon, farmer, and the daughter of Peter Selbie, farmer, and Martha Linn, both deceased. The information for her death entry was given by her grandson, John Brown.

John Gordon was next found to have died on the 30th of September 1899 at Denmuir, Dunbog, Fife. He was described in his death entry as a retired farmer aged 83, married to Annie Selbie, and the son of Peter Gordon, farmer, and Margaret McPherson, both deceased. The information for his death entry was given by his son-in-law William Brown.

The 1861 Census Schedules for Dunbog, Fife, were then consulted and the following entry was found

1861 - COLLAIRNIE HILL, DUNBOG, FIFE
John Gordon, head, aged 43, shepherd, born Crathie, Aberdeenshire
Ann Gordon, wife, aged 41, born Forfar

Donald, son, aged 11, born Foulis, Perthshire
William, son, aged 8, born Foulis, Perthshire

The 1851 Census Schedules for Foulis Easter were then consulted and the following entry was found

Prior to 1855 registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages in Scotland were voluntarily recorded in the Old Parochial Registers (unindexed) of each Parish. The old Parochial Registers of Glammiss were accordingly searched for the birth of Peter Gordon, which was found to have been recorded there thus

26th December 1838 Patrick (sic) lawful son of John Gordon and Ann (sic) Selbie in Netherhandie given in born on 19th May last.

Other children found to have been recorded to the above couple were

At NORTH BINN, FOWLIS EASTER
John Gordon, born 26th February 1840, bpt 4th March 1840
James Gordon, born 10th July 1843, bpt 6th August 1843
Charlotte Gordon, born 8th November 1845, bpt 4th December 1845
George Gordon, born 14th November 1847, bpt 27th February 1848

At COLLAIRNIE COLTON, DUNBOG, FIFE
Robert Walker Gordon, born 2nd of March 1858, bpt 10th March 1858

The old parochial records of Forfar were then searched for the marriage of John Gordon and Annie Selbie, which was found to have been recorded thus

27th November 1836 John Gordon in the parish of Glammis and Ann (sic) Selbie in this parish were proclaimed in order to marriage, and there afterwards married.

The old parochial records of Crathie and its coterminous Parish of Braemar, Aberdeenshire, were all searched from 1812 to 1823 for the birth of John Gordon, but this was not found to have been recorded. Other children to his parents
Peter Gordon and Margaret McPherson were however to have been recorded in the old parochial records of Crathie

Mary Gordon, baptised 21st July 1818 at Bovaglie, Crathie
Jane Gordon, baptised 19th December 1820 at Bovaglie, Crathie

As there are no extant records of marriage for Crathie from 1795 to 1825 no search could therefore be made in that parish for the marriage of Peter Gordon and Margaret McPherson, and this was not found to have been recorded between 1812 and 1818 in the coterminous parish of Braemar.

The general index of deaths in Scotland was next searched from its commencement in 1855 to 1890 for the deaths of Peter Gordon and Margaret McPherson, but they would both appear to have died before compulsory registration

The old parochial records of Crathie and Braemar were then searched from 1771 to 1801 for the birth of Peter Gordon, which was found to have been recorded thus

John Gordon in Camlet and his spouse Euphemia MacAndrew had a son baptised March 16th 1793 named Peter.

Other children found to have been recorded to the above couple in the Crathie parish records were

Marget, bpt 14th February 1790
Jean, bpt 29th May 1795
Elizabeth, bpt 7th November 1797
'daughter', bpt 8th October 1800
Alexander, bpt 15th June 1803

The old parochial records of Crathie (Birth records with a few exceptions irregular from 1725 to 1762) and Braemar (Birth records commence 1763 with only a few irregular entries until 1771) were then searched from 1742 to 1763 for the birth of John Gordon and the following entries were found in Crathie

6th August 1745 John Gordon of Crathienaird and wife Isobel, had son John baptised
1st February 1757 Donald Gordon in Easter Balmoral, had son John baptised
2nd July 1765 James Gordon in Wester Balmoral, had son John baptised

As it was not known which of these entries might be relevant the search was accordingly concluded.
