Footnotes: Modified from Ed Gordon of Cairnfield and his section on Abergeldie (Held at NLS)

ALEXANDER GORDON the 8th Laird of Abergeldie:
Died in Dundee parish before 1690

There is NO mention of Alexander the 8th Laird before September 1666 when he is said to have offered assistance to his near neighbour John Gordon of Braichlie, shortly before the latter was killed by the Farquharsons of Inverey. In December of that year (1666) Alexander Gordon the 8th Laird got back some of the lands lost by his father, thanks to his mother's relations.

The charter of the 21st of December 1666 granting to Catherine Nicholson, widow of Alexander Gordon of Abergeldie, in Life rent, and to Alexander his son in fee and his heirs and assignees whatsoever, the towns and lands of Balbaglie (Bovaglie) and Mill of Wheish.and to Alexander, his heirs and assignees whomsoever, the remaining lands of the barony of Abergeldie, comprising, Ballachalloch, Strathgruick (Strathgirnock), Lynewhork, Camislet (Camlet), Bakinloch, Tullochwhoker, Drumnacroft, Balnacroft, Clachinturn, with the west mill of Abergeldie called the Mill of Balmoral, shows that these lands had been acquired by John Irvine, brother of James Irvine of Montcoffer, and were resigned to Sir Thomas Nicholson, who in August 1655, constituted, James Chalmers, advocate, his assignee.and Thomas Nicholson, son and heir of the late Sir Thomas Nicholson with the advice of his tutors and the consent of James Chalmers, disponed the above lands in favour of Catherine Nicholson and Alexander Gordon as above, writing the whole into one free barony of Abergeldie.

Very little is known about Alexander Gordon the 8th Laird. There is a Privy Seal record of the 13th of August 1685, stating that the escheat Life rent of Alexander Gordon of Abergeldie and of certain Macgregors in Glencallater had been given to Charles, Earl of Mar, Farquharson of Invercauld and the latter's mother, but this may have referred to the 7th Laird.

In February 1689, there was recorded a sasine taken by Alexander Gordon of Abergeldie under reversion of 1000 merks in the lands of Tornawarron.

The date of death of Alexander Gordon the 8th Laird of Abergeldie, is not definitely known, but he died in Dundee parish before 1690.

Alexander Gordon the 8th Laird married Euphemia Graham, daughter of Robert Graham of Morvie, who in October 1692 gave up Alexander's inventory showing debts due by him of 1616.16s.0d and 800 merks, and owing to him 1,828.13s.4d. Euphemia Graham was still alive in 1696 as recorded in the Poll book of that year.

The 8th Laird as the 'Lord Captain of Abergeldy' is mentioned in Douai Scots College Register as having sent there in June 1654, Samuel, son of George Gordon, but the lad was sent away again as he was illegitimate.
