My first memories of being exposed to music was listening to The Carpenters and singing my favorite song of theirs, "Sing" over and over. I grew up listening to The Carpenters. My mom was obsessed with them and whenever we'd go in the car she'd pop The Carpenters tape in. At the age of 4 my mom enrolled me in some group piano lessons. Then at the age of 5 I started taking private piano lessons on and off until the age of 13. I hated practicing because I hated sitting still, but today I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to learn the piano because it's helped me out in my singing. Somewhere in there I played the violin for two years as well, and I wish I had played more. In elementary school I discovered the fun of singing and enjoyed putting on Christmas shows and other shows. It was in high school though when I really started getting more serious but my nerves and lack of confidence always interfered. It still does today when I choke at the most important moments (like singing a solo, auditioning etc...) I was the world's shyest kid, and still am a very shy person. I don't really like JUST singing in front of my friends unless I'm performing on stage or something. I've been writing lyrics for quite awhile now, or have just been jotting down whatever comes to mind. It's been really hard because my parents don't really support me in this endeavor. They think it's a phase...but I doubt that a phase would last for almost 10 years. I did convince myself that it was a phase and just plain quit for two years. But after two Shania Twain concerts, and recently after seeing The Corrs, I was really inspired. It's something I can't take out of my life. Most of the time I just wish I had guidance and support. Maybe one day I'll record a song and give it to them and see what they think of it. Hopefully then they'll start supporting me. Until then, I'm on my own. |
