ONTARIO
MARRIAGE RECORDS
To 1869
Official registration of marriages from 1869 to today is handled by the Registrar General. Confidentiality laws however, restrict the access of the public to the most recent records. Currently Ontario Marriage Records from 1874 to 1920 are available on microfilm at the Archives of Ontario in Toronto, or through interloaning to a public library or LDS, Mormon Family History Centre. Each year another year of records is released to the public, and 1921 marriages will become available during 2003. The index to these Gillespie records is available from the catalogue on this web site.

THE BATHURST DISTRICT was created in 1821 (until 1849) and  included the counties of Renfrew, Lanark and Carleton.  Marriage returns were to be sent to the Clerk of the Peace in Perth. In 1842 a separate register was created for Carleton County, but these records cannot be found and may have been destroyed in the Court House fire in the 1870's.
THE OTTAWA DISTRICT was created in 1816, and marriage records for the counties of Prescott and Russell, and some townships of Carleton County had to be sent to the Clerk of the Peace in the District Town of L'Orignal.  This district was abolished in 1849,
