INDIA : A CHOSEN DESTINY

The exhibition titled " India : A Chosen Destiny", celebrates the dignity of the unsung Indian working people and reveals a human spirit encompassing their grace andbeauty, for more often than not, they do not have much else to show for their lives. The photographs that constitute this exhibition were taken over a period of of 10 years, in a direct response against the exhibitionism of poverty. i have chosen to go beyond the limitations of poverty and its crippling suffering. I have chosen to depict the heroic, the lyrical, the potent magic that redeems our human adventure. I have tried to reveal the fragile dignity and uncertain grace of my people. This exhibition is a celebration of the dignity of humankind.

In the years that I have worked to understand my country, I have always been struck by the sacredness of the land, the expressions of language, the tyranny of tradition and the spirit of the people. Yet, in such diversity, I see a unity. It reaffirms my belief that we are all more alike than different. That when the viel of illusion is lifted, we are all one.

I am drawn to the poetry in people's life, which at times approaches a spiritual ascendancy. I have chosen to celebrate the strength of the people, the ordinariness of the everyday revealing a lyrical magic, the pain of being alive transformed into a pilgrimage of hope.

Comments about past exhibitions include Riyad Wadia of the Indian Express, " stunning work....impressionistic work. One perticular image that caught my eye was titled 'Footpath Madonna' and showed a beggar mother with her two children, a piteous pieta that tagged at the hearts strings". Ajay Ghosh of the India Post writes "The spirit of Bhuddhist monks, street children in barren cityscapes, ancient normadic marriage ceremonies and riveting Bollywood film sets will delight your appetite and feed your love and longing for home." The New York Times writes " the black and white images Giles Khan exhibits capture the quite dignity of the Indian peoples and invokes moods to stir the soul."
