COMMENTARY:

No implant of cloned human embryo’s yet.
Monday, 09 June 2003

Panos Zavos and his cloning team announced about one and a half month ago they had produced a first cloned human embryo. A few weeks later, he declared in news interviews they were ready to implant this cloned embryo in a surrogate mother. Early in June, these results were also officially published in the journal Reproductive BioMedicine with several comments from well-known IVF specialists.

Today, in an interview with CellNEWS, Dr. Zavos say’s that NO transfer has taken place yet. Neither have any preimplantation genetic diagnosis – or PGD test – been performed on the claimed cloned embryo. This, Dr. Zavos tells, will be done just prior to the actual transfer of the embryo:

"The PGD and other tests will be done within 24-48 hrs prior to the transfer."

One question that arise is, how he and his team can be so confident of having produced a ’healthy’ cloned human embryo, that will sustain growth after implantation, without ANY tests performed at all! Another question is of course the reason for the delay to implant the purported cloned embryo. To these kinds of questions Dr. Zavos replies:

"This is our first embryo transfer for the time being. We do not release any other information on other cloned embryos."

As a critical bystander, I can only ask if this is just a slightly more sophisticated scam attempt to gain attention, compared with earlier claims of cloned human babies by his competitors in this field.

Panos Zavos, US fertility specialist to implant cloned embryo in woman
Wednesday, 14 May 2003

A few weeks ago, reproductive scientist Panayiotis Zavos claimed to have grown the first human cloned embryo created expressly for reproductive purposes. Zavos' describe a four-day-old, eight–to–10 cell embryo, which he say is ready to be implanted in a woman’s uterus, in a report to appear in the June 2003 issue of Reproductive BioMedicine Online.

Today Times of Oman report that Panos Zavos is about to implant his first cloned human embryo.

According to AFP, he told on Monday that the clone was created in a secret laboratory outside the United States, in a country he would not name. The cells used for the cloning had been taken from a 45-year-old American woman. The frozen embryo would be subjected to genetic tests before implantation, he also said.

"Its frozen right now but it might not be for too long."

"We are not that desperate to transfer embryos without knowing the complete story about its genetic stability and its biological status and its ability to give rise to a healthy child," Zavos said.

"We're going to make every attempt to scrutinise this embryo and be able to make a medical, scientific decision to say that its embryo is worth transferring."

He claimed the experiments had been filmed by British documentary maker Peter Williams and that the first images would be shown on British network Channel Four this week.

The media circus surrounding these mavericks’ ‘fertility experts’ continues.
