The Southwest Virginia Governors School for Science, Mathematics, and Technology is one of eight schools established by the Governor of Virginia to create special educational opportunities for students with aptitude and interest in science and mathematics. Students attend the Governors School in the morning for advanced math and science courses and return to Galax High School in the afternoon for English and Social Studies courses.  Programs facilitate the acquisition of scientific and technical knowledge through laboratory investigation and research.  The student body is comprised of juniors and seniors from area high schools.

Computers are integrated throughout the curriculum.  Students learn word processing, data base analysis, graphing, spreadsheet, statistical software applications, and data collection from experimental, interfaced-computer software in all disciplines.

The Governors School provides educational experiences which expose students to ways mathematics and science are applied in the real world.  The activities include field research projects, internships, a visiting scientist lecture series, and visits to area colleges and universities.

Applicants must adhere to the spring application deadlines as established by the Southwest Virginia Governors School.

Governors school students are encouraged to schedule seven credit classes, three of which may be earned at the SWVGS.  Students must select three credit classes from the Galax High School master schedule.  A seventh credit opportunity must be approved by the principal and cannot exceed standard quality points.
