SCIENCE College General Biology 101 & 102 & Lab (Prerequisite: B Average in Bio I) Grade level: 11,12 (High Weight - 8 VCCS College Credits) Fundamental characteristics of living matter from the molecular level to the ecological community with emphasis on general biological principles. Diversity of living organisms, their structure, physiology, and evolution. Students taking this course will be registered for both high school and college credit. Students are responsible for purchasing their own college textbook and lab manual. Chemistry I (Prerequisite: Basic background in math, Algebra helpful) Grade level: 11,12 (Standard Weight) Chemistry I deals with the basic concepts of general chemistry: the composition of matter and the changes it undergoes as it interacts. Topics covered in lecture for example are metric system, composition of matter, chemical and physical changes, structure of the atom, periodic table and properties of elements, chemical bonding, writing of formulas, significance of chemical formulas, balancing of equations, types of equations, stoichiometric relations (mathematics of chemistry), liquid, solids, water, the solution process, ionization, the Gas Laws, etc. The concepts taught in lecture are put into practical application in lab work in which heavy emphasis is placed on the acquisition of basic laboratory skills. Chemistry II (Prerequisite: Chemistry I) Grade level: 12 (High Weight) Chemistry II is a continuation of Chemistry I covering such subject matter as acids, bases and salts, acid-base titration, chemical equilibrium, oxidation-reduction reactions, energy and rates of reactions, and organic chemistry - with accompanying labs. College General Physics I/II 201/202 (Prerequisite: Trigonometry) Grade level: 12 (High Weight - 8 VCCS College Credits) Fundamental principles of physics covers mechanics, thermodynamics, wave phenomena, electricity and magnetism, and selected topics in modern physics. Students taking this course will be registered for both high school and college credit. Students are responsible for purchasing their own college textbook and lab manual. |
