| HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION Health and Physical Education 8 (Prerequisite: Grade 8 status) Grade level: 8 Health and Physical Education classes meet on alternating days. The health curriculum includes study in human growth and development, first aid, nutrition, environment, and drug use and abuse. Activities include exercise and running, team sports skills, and rules and regulations in such sports as football, basketball, speedball, softball, and volleyball. The state physical fitness tests are given in the fall and spring. Health and Physical Education 9 (Prerequisite: Health and Physical Ed. 8) Grade level: 9 (Standard Weight) Health and Physical Education classes meet on an alternating schedule. The health curriculum includes study in mental health, body systems, substance abuse, first aid, disease control, family life and nutrition. Physical Education includes team sports, racquet sports, and various individual sports. Physical fitness is stressed throughout the year to enhance fitness scores. We incorporate weight training, aerobics and various other exercises to improve these scores. The state physical fitness tests are given in the fall and the spring. Health, Physical Education and Driver Ed 10 (Prerequisite: Health and Physical Education 9) Grade level: 10 (Standard Weight) Health and Physical Education classes meet on an alternating schedule. Classroom Driver�s Education and Health Studies are required instructional components. The curriculum includes the following: signs, signals and roadway markings, basic car control, the IPDE process, right-of-way rules, driving on expressways, driving in adverse conditions, handling emergencies, and alcohol and driving. Health instruction follows classroom driver�s education. The curriculum includes a unit on mental health, family life education, CPR, and alcohol. Individual health screenings for vision, hearing, and scoliosis occur at this grade level. Physical Education includes team sports such as volleyball, basketball, and speedball. Lifetime sports such as bowling, archery, tennis, golf, and square dance are taught. Physical fitness is stressed throughout the year, as students do various exercises to improve their physical fitness levels. The state physical fitness tests are given in the fall and spring. Advanced Physical Education I (Prerequisite: None) Grade level: 11,12 (Standard Weight) This course is designed to enhance overall fitness. Emphasis is on muscle strength, muscle endurance, cardiorespiratory fitness and the ability to use weight training as a tool to change body composition. Advanced Physical Education II (Prerequisite: Advanced PE I) Grade level: 11, 12 (Standard Weight) This course is a continuation of Weighting Training I. |
