MUSIC Band/Color Guard (Prerequisite: Middle school band experience preferred) Grade level: 8,9,10,11,12 (Standard Weight) This ensemble is the primary instrumental music group of Galax High School. Members are required to participate in all concerts, contests, parades, and rehearsals during both marching and concert seasons. Marching band begins in July with band camp, and runs to the end of football season. Participation in both marching and concert band are required. The objectives will focus on quality performance, discipline, and musicianship. The Color Guard is an auxiliary to the marching band. Auditions will be held in the Spring for the upcoming year. Color Guard members will be expected to display proficiency in marching, use of various flags and accessories, and dance. Color Guard members are required to attend all marching board rehearsals and performances as well as individual rehearsals. Prerequisite: Be enrolled in either 5th period Band or 5th period Chorus. Chorus (Prerequisite: An interest in music & singing) Grade level: 8,9,10,11,12 (Standard Weight) Students in chorus are exposed to a varied selection of vocal repertoire, including classical popular, rock and traditional forms. The group presents several concerts throughout the year and attendance is required for all performances and rehearsals. Students enrolling in chorus should be able to demonstrate their ability to sing and have a keen interest in vocal music. Music Appreciation (Prerequisite: None) Grade level: 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 (Standard Weight) This course will explore the wider world of music, including music theory, history, styles, composers, performers, instruments and music of various cultures. Students will have the opportunity to research and report on various styles, performers and composers of music, as well as to discuss their own musical interests and current issues in music. College Music Theory (Prerequisite: Two years of musical instruction) MUS 111 - 112 - 8 VCCS credits Grade level: 11,12 (High Weight) Music theory is the study of the elements that make up all written and aural music. These elements include the basics of rhythm, melody, harmony and form in music, as well as concepts such as pitch and note values, intervals key signatures, scales, chords, and the analysis of how musical pieces are composed. Students will demonstrate these concepts through their own musical compositions and examinations with the opportunity to demonstrate skills with instruments they already play. Along with the study of elements of theory the students will study the music of various famous composers in history and how they relate to certain theory concepts. |
