MATHEMATICS

Geometry/Part 1 (Prerequisite: Algebra I/Part 2 or Algebra I)
Grade level: 9,10,11 (Standard Weight)

Geometry/Part 1 is the first year of a two year program in the essentials of geometry.  It uses hands-on explanation and real world applications to investigate such topics as deductive reasoning and proof, parallel lines, triangles, quadrilaterals, congruence, similarity, circles, volume, and coordinate and transformational geometry.  This course is recommended for students who have successfully completed the Algebra I/Part 1 and Algebra I/Part 2 sequence.

Geometry/Part 2 (Prerequisite: Geometry/Part 1)
Grade level: 10,11,12 (Standard Weight)

Geometry/Part 2 is the second year of the two year program in geometry.  It is designed to be a follow up of the first year and taken by those students who have completed Geometry/Part 1.  This course will cover the equivalent of the second semester of Geometry.

Geometry (Prerequisite: Algebra I/Part 2 and a passing score on the SOL test or Algebra I)
Grade level: 9,10,11,12 (Standard Weight)

This is a traditional one year course in geometry that includes the study of deductive reasoning and proof, parallel lines, triangles, quadrilaterals, congruence, similarity, circles, surface area and volume, coordinate and transformational geometry, and the use of geometric models to solve problems.  Students who have taken Algebra I are usually successful in this course.

Algebra II (Prerequisite:  Geometry)
Grade level:  10,11,12 (High Weight)

This course is a thorough treatment of advanced algebraic concepts through the study of functions, polynomials, rational expressions, complex numbers, matrices, and sequences and series.

Computer Math (Prerequisite: Alg. I/Part 2)
Grade level: 12 (Standard Weight)

The major focus of this course is to provide students with experiences in using the computer to solve problems which can be set up as mathematical models.  The course curriculum will include writing and using computer programs, translating mathematical expressions into computer statements, solving mathematical problems using the computer, and designing and implementing computer graphics.

Trigonometry/Probability and Statistics (Prerequisite: Algebra II recommended)
Grade level: 11 (High Weight)

Trigonometry is a study of trigonometric definitions, applications, graphing, and solving equations and inequalities - emphasis is placed on using connections between right triangle ratios, trigonometric functions, and circular functions.  (This course may be taken along with Pre-Calculus.)

This section is an introduction to the basic components of Probability and Statistics.  One of the principle purposes of probability is to put a numerical measure on the likelihood that the result of an experiment will have a certain designated form.  Statistics is concerned with the collection, presentation, analysis, and interpretation of sets of data.  Topics will include permutations, functions, combinatorics, probability, statistics, algebraic systems, frequency distribution, measures of central tendency, and standard deviation, the standard normal curve.
