| FOREIGN LANGUAGE French I (Prerequisite: �C� in English in previous school year) Grade level: 8,9,10,11,12 (Standard Weight) The aims of French I include the development of basic oral expression, listening comprehension, and elementary reading and writing skills. Cultural information helps students gain an appreciation and understanding of French-speaking people around the world. Learning tools include videos, interactive CD�s, and audio CD�s. French II (Prerequisite: At least a �C� in French I, Teacher recommendation) Grade level: 9,10,11,12 (Standard Weight) The skills of speaking, listening, comprehension, reading, and writing are further developed. Vocabulary is presented through illustrations, definitions, and cognates. Reading selections deal with contemporary themes. Structure drills involve conversations dealing with everyday real-life situations. French III 5130 (Prerequisite: At least a �C� in French II, Teacher recommendation) Grade level: 10,11,12 (High Weight) French III includes stories and conversations which emphasize people and life styles, a cultural focus on understanding the way which people of the French-speaking world live, personalized activities and word games, and selections dealing with career opportunities related to the language. Spanish I (Prerequisite: �C� in English in previous school year) Grade level: 8,9,10,11,12 (Standard Weight) The emphasis of Spanish I is on pronunciation, vocabulary development, basic conversational skills, and mastery of simple grammar through lively classroom activities. Students will be introduced to the geography of the Spanish-speaking world, and to various aspects of popular Hispanic culture. Spanish II (Prerequisite: At least a �C� in Spanish I, Teacher recommendation) Grade level: 9,10,11,12 (Standard Weight) Spanish II is a continuation of Spanish I. More emphasis, however, is placed on listening skills, oral proficiency, and the usage of the language through creative writing and journals. The understanding and appreciation of the Hispanic culture, its geography, and popular cultural themes are also discussed. Spanish III (Prerequisite: At least a �C� in Spanish II, Teacher recommendation) Grade level: 10,11,12 (High Weight) Spanish III challenges students to use their oral, listening, reading and writing skills through intensive activities. Such activities include personalized conversations, creative writing, reading Hispanic literature, acting out real life and make-believe situations, discussing contemporary culture, etc. Students are also introduced to more complex grammar structures. Electronic Classroom: Latin I (Prerequisite: �B� Average) Grade level: 8,9,10,11,12 (Standard Weight) Prerequisite: Score in the 80th percentile or higher in the majority of categories of the Stanford test; Combined score of 800 or above on the SAT test or a combined score of 80 on the PSAT test; Should have been absent from school no more than 10 days in each previous year of school, and maintain at least a �B� average. In Latin, the student begins to develop the cultural understandings, attitudes, and linguistic performance skills necessary to experience the life style and culture of the Classical World. He gains greater perspective on the present as he finds roots in his own culture and language in areas of Roman life such as history, government, literature, art, architecture, philosophy, religion, the military, and linguistics. As he begins to understand the impact of ancient Rome on the present, he increases his English vocabulary and his understanding of the structure of the language. Electronics Classroom: Latin II (Prerequisite: Latin I ) Grade level: 9,10,11,12 (Standard Weight) The student continues to develop the cultural understandings, attitudes, and linguistic performance skills. He increases his awareness of the contributions of Roman civilization to our Western civilization, increases knowledge of the Roman way of life, builds Latin and English vocabularies, improves reading skills, and improves mastery of the Latin structural system. As he gains knowledge, he broadens his perspective on life and language today as they are influenced by the past. Electronics Classroom: Latin III (Prerequisite: Latin II) Grade level: 10,11,12 (High Weight) This course is a continuation of Latin II. |
