ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

Alternative English I (ESL I)
Grade level: 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 (Standard Weight)

The purpose of the ESL I class at GHS is to help non-English speaking or extremely limited English-speaking students learn to communicate socially in English as quickly as possible through ESL education and to help those students become successful in their school programs. Instruction will also strive to help those students adjust culturally to life in the United States.

Alternative English II (ESL II) (Prerequisite: Score of 3 or 4 on Stanford English Language Proficiency Assessment SELP)
Grade level: 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 (Standard Weight)

The purpose of the ESL II class at GHS is to continue to instruct limited-English proficient students in the English language. Greater emphasis is placed on reading and writing skills. Also content area classes are closely monitored and content area instruction is scaffolded and reinforced.

Alternative Math
Grade level: 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 (Standard Weight)

The Alternative Math class is a course designed to offer basic math skills, as well as remediation for pre-algebra, algebra and geometry to limited English proficient students.
