English 12 (Prerequisite:  English 11)
Grade level:  12 (Standard Weight)

English 12 will require students to read and analyze a variety of British literature, as well as literature of other cultures.  The students will produce expository and informational papers, which will be logically organized and contain clear and accurate ideas.  The students will also produce a well-documented research paper, using MLA documentation.  Grammar and mechanics will be reviewed through writing and editing required papers.  English 12 will also require students to plan and deliver a 5-10 minute oral presentation.

This course develops writing ability for study, college work, and other areas of life.  Writings are based on experience, observation, research, and reading analysis of selected literature.  Students learn writing as a process:  understanding audience and purpose, exploring ideas and information, composing, revision, and editing.  Writing supports the integrating of experiences in thinking, reading, listening, and speaking.

Students who successfully complete this course earn six semester hours of college credit in addition to a Virginia high school credit.  Students are responsible for buying their own college textbook.

The English Department of Galax High School requires that students who are enrolled in Honors English classes for the year 2005-2006 must read selected books during the summer. This is an advanced class in which the students are asked to study challenging issues and materials. It is the responsibility of the students to acquire the reading material and study guide prior to leaving school for the summer. Otherwise students may be scheduled in standard English.

The reading material must be read by the first day of English class.  Students will have a test or a project based on the summer reading.  Student scores on the test or project will weigh heavily on the first six weeks� grading period.  Students will also sign a pledge that they have read the assigned material. Requests for alternate reading material must be filed with the principal by
July 1.

Journalism (Prerequisite:  English 9, teacher recommendation, writing sample)
Grade level:10,11,12 (Standard Weight)

Journalism involves factual writing, editing, proofreading, reporting, and production of finished products including a newspaper to be distributed throughout the school and community. Creative writing may be explored through the study of poetry, short stories, essays, and other literary works.  The student is graded according to his or her own writing and class contributions.

Speech and Drama Appreciation (Prerequisite:  English 8)
Grade level:  9,10,11,12 (Standard Weight)

Speech and Drama Appreciation is a performance oriented course which allows a student to experiment with the principles of speech and theater.  Students will complete projects involving voice and diction, public speaking, and oral interpretation.  Through observation and participation students will enhance their knowledge of theatrical costuming, make-up, acting, choreography, design, business management and producing.
