GRADE POINT TOTAL (GPT):
Grade Point Totals will be used to determine class rank.  Grade Point Totals are accumulated from a maximum of 7 credits taken at Galax High School during the school day.  Courses taken outside of the school day require prior administrative approval.

Grade points are awarded according to the weight of the class.  For calculation of the GPT, guidance will use the high weight classes showing the best grades. These six or seven numbers are simply added together.

Example (Gr. 12)          Grade                Points

English 12                      B                       3
Algebra II                      B                        4 (High)
Biology II (Anatomy)      C                       3 (High)
U.S. Government            A                       4
Keyboarding Applic.        B                       3
Auto Service Tech. I       A                       4
                                                              21 = GPT for grade 12.

21 will be added to the cumulative grade point total.

The GPT enables students to see where they are in relation to past achievement and future goals.  The information will also be used for instructional planning.

GPT will be calculated by including
1 high weight course for Freshmen
3 high weight courses for Sophomores
4 high weight courses for Juniors
4 high weight courses for Seniors

RANKING:
Students will be ranked by grade level according to their grade point total.  This and all other student information is confidential and will be kept in the guidance office.  A students parent or guardian with the assistance of a counselor may view the permanent record upon request.

Final rank is calculated at the end of the first semester of a student's senior year using full credit (one Carnegie credit) values in grades 9 - 11, and first semester value in grade 12.

Class valedictorian shall be the student with the highest GPT.  The salutatorian shall be the student with the second highest GPT.  The valedictorian and salutatorian must have been enrolled in Galax High School for seven (7) consecutive semesters.  Other remaining students, including transfer students, in the top ten percent of the class will be named honor graduates.

In case of ties, all students with identical scores will receive the appropriate honor ranking.
