CROSSROADS RURAL ENTREPRENEURIAL INSTITUTE (CREI)

The Crossroads Institute increases education and training opportunities in the region. Comprised of 3 centers this innovative educational and economic development partnership focuses on the economic development of the project area (Carroll County, Grayson County, Smyth County and the City of Galax). Together in one location, these centers promise to provide a unified approach to changing the lives of people with a broad scope of higher educational opportunities, training programs, a mixed-use incubator for business startup and acceleration.

1) The Southwest Regional Enterprise Center (SREC) will establish an incubator environment for entrepreneurs to bring ideas to the market place. It will serve as an initial seeding location for small businesses and light manufacturing/industrial companies wishing to expand. These new small to medium sized businesses will provide an opportunity for private and venture capital investments.

2) The Center for Technical and Entrepreneurial Studies will offer diverse, authentic learning opportunities focused on entrepreneurism and economic development to high school and college students in high demand technical/occupational programs. This collaboration will gain the attention of the private sector as ideas and products/services merge for investment    opportunities.

3) The Center for Lifelong Learning will provide beginning (Basic skills, General Education Development (GED) certificate and English as a Second Language (ESL) and continuing education (technical, workplace, managerial) opportunities that address the training needs of businesses.  Basic skills training such as ESL programs in concert with the entrepreneurial             opportunities provided by the SREC will result in new businesses, new jobs, and private sector investment.
