| CROSSROADS RURAL ENTREPRENEURIAL INSTITUTE (CREI) The Crossroads Institute increases education and training opportunities in the region. Comprised of 3 centers this innovative educational and economic development partnership focuses on the economic development of the project area (Carroll County, Grayson County, Smyth County and the City of Galax). Together in one location, these centers promise to provide a unified approach to changing the lives of people with a broad scope of higher educational opportunities, training programs, a mixed-use incubator for business startup and acceleration. 1) The Southwest Regional Enterprise Center (SREC) will establish an incubator environment for entrepreneurs to bring ideas to the market place. It will serve as an initial seeding location for small businesses and light manufacturing/industrial companies wishing to expand. These new small to medium sized businesses will provide an opportunity for private and venture capital investments. 2) The Center for Technical and Entrepreneurial Studies will offer diverse, authentic learning opportunities focused on entrepreneurism and economic development to high school and college students in high demand technical/occupational programs. This collaboration will gain the attention of the private sector as ideas and products/services merge for investment opportunities. 3) The Center for Lifelong Learning will provide beginning (Basic skills, General Education Development (GED) certificate and English as a Second Language (ESL) and continuing education (technical, workplace, managerial) opportunities that address the training needs of businesses. Basic skills training such as ESL programs in concert with the entrepreneurial opportunities provided by the SREC will result in new businesses, new jobs, and private sector investment. The Crossroads Institute offers students the opportunity to begin post secondary programs while still enrolled in high school including: Practical Nursing I (PNE141, PNE 142, PNE 155, PNE 173) Grade level: 11, 12 (1 Standard Weight Credit -9 VCCS credits) Nursing Skills I and Nursing Skills II studies principles as well as the performance of the procedures that are essential to the basic nursing care of patients. PNE 141 requires 2 hours of lecture per week. PNE 142 requires 2 hours of lecture and 3 hours of laboratory work totaling 5 hours per week. PNE 173, Pharmacology, studies history, classification, sources, effects, uses and legalities of drugs. Teaches problem-solving skills used in determining doses of drugs. Emphasizes major drug classes and specific agents within each class. Presents preparation and administration of medications. Lecture 1 hour. PNE 155, Body Structure and Function studies the structure and function of the body. Lecture 3 hours per week. Electrical Trades and Plumbing I & II Grade: 11,12 (Standard Weight) Students will have the opportunity to begin an Associates Degree in Applied Science with a major in Electrical Trades and Plumbing. |
