The Earl Haig Fund
Hibernian football club and its many supporters
in Edinburgh and Leith also enlisted during the war.
Details will be added in due course.
It is thought many joined the 15th (City of Edinburgh) Royal Scots, and one joined the 16th early on.  Most married men were disuaded from enlisting at this time but joined later.   It is probable there were Hibs fans amongst those who suffered in the Gretna train disaster of 1915.  This troop train was involved in a collision with two passing expresses.  The regiment on board was the 7th Royal Scots, mostly drawn from the Leith area.
I believe Pilrig cemetry contains a memorial to these men.
Leith was at this time still a seperate entity from Edinburgh,
not being amalgamated until the nineteen twenties.

Sandy Grosert was thought to be the only Hibernian player who enlisted in McCrae's Battalion. He enlisted in the R.A.S.C. Most of Hibernians small squad were married men and the call was for single men to come forward. Sandy was joined by many Hibernian fans who flocked to the colours. Among them one Harry Swann who later became Hibernian chairman.(Was Swann the bookmaker who opened a shop outside Tynecastle and lived of the Hearts players of the day?)
Sandy did return to playing and actually managed a goal against the Heart of Midlothian in Hibs 3-1 defeat! in January 1919 .
Read about this game on the excellent
London Hearts website.
