Ordinary Afternoon It happened on an ordinary afternoon. No one was in the house, Just he and I. Our scene: relaxed, casual. The TV was tuned in to a court show. The picture fuzzy; The volume down. We called the show absurd: The defendant white-trash And the plaintiff a whore. In the middle of our chit-chat, We undressed each other. It wasn't my idea. But I don't remember it being his. All was quiet, Except for the huff of our breaths And the occasional blink of the TV. I wasn't really interested in him But more with the judge on TV-- She had sparkling blue eyes. The clock said two. He had to go. People to do, he said. I made plans to keep from looking pathetic. Everyone says the first time is special-- But I didnt feel different; All was the same As I thought it would be. revised: May 2002 This is a poem about making a decision. A hasty, yet thought-out decision. In the end, it all turned out as expected. |
