Mia was born in New York where she was very poor, her mother was a drunk and her father was abusive. He would come home from work with alcohol for her mother and then beat her when mother got too drunk. Mia would also see her father's wrath as though he hated her because she was not his daughter. Mia's biological father had run out on her and her mother and when Bill came along, he took over the role as "step-dad". Mia wanted so desperately to get out of the neighbourhood she was living in and she vowed that she would get her and her mother of their horrible situation.
When Mia was 16, she met a boy named Ian. Ian was everything that Mia could have asked for, after they got to know each other, Mia told Ian of her dreams to leave the neighbourhood and Ian told her that he would help her in any way that he could.
During this time, Mia's stepfather had gotten worse with the beatings. Mia's mother had been hospitalized after a fight she had with Bill. Mia was very angry and confronted Bill about what he had done to her mother. in a heated argument, Bill tried to sexually assault her and Mia blacked out. When she woke up, she was in Ian's home and didn't remember what happened during the argument with Bill.
With her mother gone and Bill's mysterious disappearance, Mia emancipated herself and started a life with Ian. When they were 18, the summer in Brooklyn New York changed Mia's life forever. One night Ian told Mia to meet him at a certain place because he was going to get something that would make their dreams come true. Mia thought that this was her chance to start over and get rid of her sordid past. Sadly, when Mia arrived at the spot, she didn't find Ian there...all she found was a pool of blood. Thinking that someone had murdered Ian, Mia felt as though she had nothing to live for and left Brooklyn.
From there, her life went downhill completely. Having no family, no friends, Mia moved from place to place. The one constant thing in her life that didn't change was her desire to work at a fashion magazine, mainly Couture. Mia studied everything about the editor and chief Kate Howard, Kate was her idol. Hearing that there was an opening for Kate Howard's assistant in Port Charles, Mia heads there to become the next big fashion mogul.
