Derek is in his late 30's and a brilliant neurosurgeon. He was once married to the beautiful Dr. Addison Montgomery-Shepherd but when he caught her in bed with his best friend, Mark, Derek knew his marriage was over. Moving from Manhattan to Seattle, Derek joined the staff at Seattle Grace and fell deeply in love with an intern, Meredith Grey. Their relationship flourished, until Addison moved to Seattle to give their marriage a second shot. Derek tried his best with Addison, and they even had a daughter together. Their marriage died a second time around when Addison was killed by a crazy patient who's child was deeply ill. Derek mourned the loss of the wife he'd fallen back in love with and accepted a job as Chief Neurosurgeon at Port Charles General Hospital shortly after. Derek has packed up his house, his career and his young daughter and will arrive in General Hospital ready to put Seattle behind him.
