Mob Wars: Weighing the Sides

Port Charles has always been a mob holding. Since the days when Robert Scorpio was police commissioner, mob wars have been a fact of life for the citizens of Port Charles. It almost seems as if they have become complacent toward the violence that plays out in their streets. But the current war building might shake the people of Port Charles wide awake.
Port Charles is now the battle ground for four different mob factions – The Corinthos, Alcazar, Vargos and Giovanni families. Each would desperately love to be the one in control of Port Charles and in the past year they have ramped up their efforts to be the top dog. Let’s take a close look at the contenders…
First Up: The Corinthos Faction
Lead by Sonny Corinthos, this organization is a mix of mob rule and family values. Sonny relies heavily on his right hand man Jason Morgan for advice and an accurate shot. Sonny is married to Carly who tries her best to be understanding.
Their strengths: The Corinthos faction is currently in control of Port Charles, a position they have held since the early 90s. They have held off other contenders before.
Their weaknesses: Jason’s recent illness has brought out his Quartermaine memories and he is currently conflicted about his role in Sonny’s organization. Will Sonny lose his ace in the hole?
Next up: The Alcazar Faction
Twin brothers Lorenzo and Luis are at the head of this organization. They come from South America and seem quite content to settle in the town. Of all the contenders to the throne, the Alcazar family has been here the longest.
Their strengths: The brothers have been raised into this life by generations of Alcazars. They have done well for themselves in both South America and Florida – and are just working their ways up north.
Their weaknesses: Lorenzo and Luis don’t always see eye to eye about how to run their business. Lorenzo is a family man – married with a son, an adopted daughter and another child on the way, and Luis believes in doing whatever is necessary to win. If they butt heads over something, they could be too busy to take over Port Charles.
Next up: The Vargos Faction
This family comes from Mexico, where they hold a position of great power. It is led by Carlos Vargos, who married his wife Marisol to take over her family’s struggling business. He turned it into one to be feared and now they have turned their attention to Port Charles.
Their strengths: Carlos has the drive to succeed. He has already proven that he can hold the underdog position and still come ahead. He knows what it is like to have nothing and because of that, fights all the harder to stay on top.
Their weakness: For decades, Carlos ruled over the family business with the help of his wife Marisol. They were a solid team and now that has been shattered with years of infidelity on both sides. They recently admitted that it wasn’t working and are moving toward a divorce.
And finally: The Giovanni Faction
This faction is the newest in town and possibility the most unstable of the four. Lead by Gustavo Giovanni, it has quickly challenged the other three contenders by attacking them all at once – killing Sonny’s nanny, blowing up the penthouse with Luis’ daughter inside and kidnapping Marisol’s son.
Their strengths: Gustavo is a mixture of crazy and intelligence – he is crazy enough to do anything but intelligent enough to pull it off. He has a plan and does not negotiate.
Their weaknesses: Gustavo walks the fine line when it comes to his insanity. He could one day cross it and instead of being his strength it could lead to his down fall. As well, Gustavo is fixated on his children and if the other factions realize just how much so, they could use that to their advantage.
Overall, perhaps the biggest strength of the Corinthos, Alcazar and Vargos factions is their willingness to work together against the insanity of the Giovanni faction. If they can continue to work together they may be able to rid Port Charles of Gustavo. Then the real question will be – do they continue to work together or do they turn on each other and continue to fight for ultimate control of Port Charles?
