Lesson Plan Report

DORCAS AMPADU

INTRODUCTION

Water is life and without it Man cannot survive. However certain negative activities of Man have resulted in the pollution of our water bodies, dwindling of the size of our water sources, drying up of our waterbodies and the prevalence of water- borne diseases. Aside these problems that threaten our water  resources, in Ghana, access to good drinking water, is a problem. Students were therefore sensitized on the importance of managing our water resources and the need to conserve water with special reference to the home. The students were taught practical ways of conserving water in the home. During the lesson, actual figures were used in calculating how much water was actually wasted each time they neglected water conservation methods. To say that the students were dumbfounded at this revelation is an under statement. The lesson actually went down well with the students.

SUCCESSES AND CHALLENGES

The preparation before the lesson was really helpful. The CD ROMs used, gave a step-by-step
instruction on article and story writing. Students therefore understood every part of the lesson.
The search engines used, enabled students to get quick access to more and highly updated information  from the websites on conserving water in the home.
The students were fascinated by the presentation features of the Power Point, hence, they were highly  motivated, spurring them on to co-operate among each other in their activity.
The “spell check” function on Word helped students to become more conscious of the right spellings and  to be able to check their own mistakes.  Students were also exposed to a wide range of words and
expressions thereby building on their vocabulary.
Students’ knowledge in water conservation improved greatly.     The problems encountered during the lesson were, limited access of students to computers, thereby leading to limited time for computer use for students.
The school’s server doesn’t function, hence, activities regarding Internet services such as downloading useful information from websites onto diskettes had to be done at the Internet cafes where students had  to pay sums of money before accessing it.

CLASSROOM ORGANIZATION AND LOGISTICS

The school’s computer laboratory has twenty (20) computers and a server linked to the Internet. The server has, however, been disconnected. Students thereby had to download information from websites onto diskettes for use.
CD ROMs on article and story writing were brought into the computer lab and demonstrated by the teacher after which students used it.
The teacher demonstrated how to use the Power Point and taught students how to          use the software with the aid of a projector.
The class is made up of eighty - (80) students; the teacher therefore divided the class into two. Each group of forty - (40) students used two class periods of eighty (80) minutes.  Two students were therefore allocated  to 1 computer.  Fifteen (15) minutes was allocated for teacher demonstration. Twenty (20) minutes for students’ activity. Forty (40) minutes was allocated for students’ presentation and discussion and five minutes (5) for slower students to be able to complete their work.

SUGGESTED CHANGES

.More time should have been allocated for the lesson for students to benefit much more from the lesson. With  the presentation and discussions in particular, the teacher realized the students needed more time

FEEDBACK

There has been increased awareness on the importance of water to life and conservation of water   especially in the home. Students have invented catchy words that they repeat ever so often. Students have developed greater interest in Information Technology. They plead for more lessons in the  computer lab. For, they are thrilled with Power Point presentation using the projector.  They were glad to edit their presentation without the cancellation and subsequent repetition that characterized the normal classroom work they were used to.
The lesson provided a break from the monotonous activity of blackboard writing with its attendant chalk particles, and the routine notes copying that they are used to.
The lesson has aroused students’ interest in article writing and story writing. It has also improved their
vocabulary and communication skills. This was evident by the beautiful articles and stories written as
  their assignment after the lesson.
As a result of this activity with its subsequent positive effects, other students have expressed keen
interest in the integration of Information Technology in their clas
