Lesson Plan Report

OSCAR WILLIAM DONKOR

INTRODUCTION

The project seeks to create a platform to educate students on the AIDS menace and this lesson is a partial fulfilment which seeks to explore student's ability to use technology to present findings in graph form.        The lesson aimed at getting students draw graphs to illustrate the Statistics of Reported Cumulative Aids Cases in the 10 regions of Ghana. They were also required to make some reasonable deductions from it.

The data was collected from the Ministry of Health, Ashanti region         office, on behalf of the students due to time constraints. There was no problem with the acquisition of the computer for the two days. The class was 36 in number and there were computers just enough for the number of students in the class.
The class was divided into 12 groups of 3 to 1 computer. They were taken through basic skills on the Spreadsheet as outlined in the lesson         plan. Hand-outs were given out to them with which they used as sample document. They were taught how to save a document, construct a histogram and a pie chart, and how to print out hard copies. They worked as a team rotating roles as typist, grapher and monitor or supervisor. After each concept had been explained the teacher goes         round making sure students were doing the right thing.
Finally, they used MS-Word to write out their deductions and reflected on the topic on: “My Experiences these last two days”

SUCCESSES AND CHALLENGES

Before the lesson my only fear was that of black-out which was very rampant the week before and also that week for the lesson. Fortunately we had a field day without any interruptions during the lesson.

The lesson was originally planned for one of the classes I handle. Unfortunately, they were all final years students who were then writing theirmock exams. I therefore had to fall on a second year class. They willingly obliged to take up the challenge. I must say that everything went on satisfactorily.
Something unexpected however happened. At the end of the first day, students were asked to go round to assess each others group work. In the course of their rounds some cables snapped from their sockets putting off two computers. One group unfortunately had not save their work. I quickly restored power to the computers , gave a helping hand for lack         of time and finally asked them to continue. They almost got dejected !
Yes, as expected some students were very smart at grasping the concepts. Evidently, they helped others in their group who were having difficulties. This is to be expected.

CLASSROOM ORGANIZATION AND LOGISTICS

My organizational scheme I must say was satisfactory. This is a classroom meant for 26 computers but had to take up 36 students working 3 to a computer in 12 groups. I did not want to alter the original set up of the lab because of the cable arrangements. There was a bit of overcrowding but then I was the only person who had to go round, as the students were glued to their computers until the end of the lesson.

The duration for the lesson was supposed to be an hour but had to be extended by 30 more minutes, each day to make room for more time to practice. Yes the students had enough time to finish their work, because not much was expected from them. Student computer ratio was not the best. At least two to one would have been better
