CALCULATING THE COST OF RECYCLING POLYTHENE AS A POLYTHENE WATSE CONTROL MEASURE

Introduction

The proliferation of iced water and iced cream sold in polythene stachets on the Ghanaian market has resulted in the litering of the country with the polythene waste after its contents have been consumed.
There has been that constant battle to rid the country off this polythene filth.
Recently the idea has been to recycle the polythene waste as a means of combatting this problem. People have however cried over the possible huge cost of such an endeavour.
Hopefully this project will draw attention to how cost effective the recycling of polythene as a control measure could be.
In calculating the cost it will also give the students the chance to use technology and softwares such as Excel to bring alive maths in their lives.

Subject and Grade level: Mathematics
Senior Secondary School 2 (16 - 18 years old)

Lesson Goals

  • Students will come to appreciate the use of recycling polythene waste as a cost effective way of handling polythene waste
  • Re-enforce the use of Technology in the teaching and learning process and particularly use excel as a software to do calculations and plot graphs

Content Objectives

  • By the end of the lesson an attitudnal change is expected towards the use of re-cycling to manage polythene waste
  • By the end of the lesson Students should have re-enforced their skills in the use of Technology and related softwares to do research, calculations and plot graphs

Performance Objectives

  • Students will be able to use ICT in the teaching and learning process.
  • Students will be able to bring maths alive in their lives.

Technology Objectives

  • Students will improve their skills on using the computer and the internet as research tools
  • Students will re-enforce their use of ICT and its realated software to do calculations and plot graphs.

Instructional Activities (teacher component)
Teacher introduces the lesson, breaks students into groups, supervises the research work, helps with the preparation of the reports including the calculations and the plotting of graphs and chairs the presentations and discussions.

Learning Activities (student component)
By researching for information on the internet and drawing conclusions, students will be sharpening their research skills and analytical power
By Using ICT to do calculations and plot graphs as well as doing power point presentations, students will be sharpening their skills in the use of ICT in the teaching learning process
