Lesson Plan Report

INTRODUCTION

The use of polythene has become a part of everyday life for the people in Ghana. It is cheap and easily available. It is water proof and easy to carry. Many plastic factories are springing up in Ghana without any national policy guidelines. Most of them produce millions of polythene bags daily. About ten million of them are thrown away everyday as waste on the streets, in the drains and on water bodies leading to serious environmental hazards.

Students were sensitized on the hazards created by polythene waste and the need to attract tourists to the country in order to generate revenue. Students were shocked to learn that through their carelessness the nation was losing so much revenue and at the same time causing so much damage. The students were excited by the use of Technology in their lesson. It was a nouvelle move. Initially though a few who were not familiar with the computer were shy but as the excitement caught on, they became fascinated. The result was unbelievable. There was maximum cooperation and participation.

SUCCESSES AND CHALLENGES

I had to prepare the technology tools before hand and this made up for extra time though the time was still not enough. The CD ROM’s gave the systematic approach to article and report writing. The use of the spell and grammar check improved students’ expression and spellings. The Power Point presentation was the ultimate. Students were spell bound by its features. This gave maximum attention. Students learnt paragraphing and to put their ideas in topic sentences. The students were excited that they could get information within a short time from the Internet through search engines. The most important problem was power outages. Unsaved work was lost and this affected the already limited time. There was time constraint. The computers in the school were also not enough for a class of eighty.

CLASSROOM ORGANIZATION AND LOGISTICS

The school has twenty computers and a server. The web sites were downloaded and saved on the server. The CD ROM’s were used to teach articles, reports and poems. The teacher demonstrated the use of Power Point to students. With the aid of a projector, the students presented their work using Power Point. Students completed their work. The class of eighty was divided into two groups of forty with two students assigned a computer. Each group used up two periods of 80 minutes. The pair was allocated thirty minutes for their activity. Each pair had a fast student to assist a slow one. The teacher used ten minutes for demonstration as most of the preparations had already been done. Instructional materials handed out. Forty minutes was used for presentation and discussion.

SUGGESTED CHANGES

The students needed more time for the whole lesson. Provision should be made for an electricity generator to make up for power failure.

FEEDBACK

The impact the lesson had on the students was great. Awareness was created on the dangers of polythene. The class has formed a group called “The Environmentalists”. Posters were put up to sensitize other students. One of their objectives is to encourage other students to change their attitude on littering. Students were overwhelmed that learning can be easy and interesting using Technology instead of pouring over books all the time. They appreciated the change.
