"Mom was born on the farm in Lamont, MI, where she lived until she was 10 years old. The family moved to Overisel, MI, where she received her schooling. She enjoyed school and begged to continue but was not allowed to go on (This was the day before Women's LiberationMovement, even before Women's Suffrage!) She was the only child at home therefore lonely; apparently this was the reason she was given a birthday gift of a piano. Quite a gift for that era." "Mom went to work as a domestic in Holland for Mrs. George Kollen until she married. (Kollen family donated property for Kollen Park on Lake Macatawa in Holland, MI." "Mom's neighbors, the Korterings, introduced Mom and Dad at a new years eve party which was held across the street from her home. They were married some time later in 1918, moving Dad's Grandmother's house a mile north, which is now called Country Club Road and Adams Street. One year later they bought a farm from Dad's parents and lived there until his retirement." "Mom was a strong active lady. She did her own decorating (painting outside and in) along with helping her friends and neighbors, gardening, knitting, crocheting, and embroidery work she also enjoyed." "Do you remmember the days when one chair was the favorite in the house? Children would argue about it. Mom's expression was "Die opstaat zign plaats vergat." Those who stand up lose their place." I liked this one too. "Die zachktjes loojen hebben geen erg in die hart loojet zein het niet." Those who walk slow don't notice it and those who walk fast don't see it." "Ebenezer Reformed Church was their church. She was active in Ladies Missionary Society, a sponsor for the Christian Endeaver when I was young, and weekly prayer meeting imperative." "Dad farmed all his life, enjoyed hunting and fishing and was known for his good hunting dogs. He loved people, was an elder in the church and did his share of calling on the sick and wayward He was such a gentle father we loved him dearly as did everyone who knew him." "Ebenezer Reformed Church was so special to him, little did I know why until after he was gone. I found out his Great Grandfather was one of the founders.& |
