| 3. | Kate Schaap, born 30 OCT 1885 at Grand Rapids, Kent, MI; died 02 MAR 1960 at Jackson, MI;
married 15 OCT 1908 Harvey Cook born 12 JUL 1884 at Tallmadge twp, MI; died 14 MAR 1962; son
of Arthur Cook and Jane Rankin.
Kate Schaap lived with her parents near Lamont on the farm. After her schooling she was hired as a Nanny to the three Barnhart children in Grand Rapids, MI. They were so wealthy that Kate had servants to care for her clothes, room, etc. When the Barnharts wanted Kate to go to europe with them Kate's father refused to let her go with them. She then went to the County Farm at Eastmanville to work. Harvey was already working there. They were married two years later. They lived in Kalamazoo where Harvey was an interurban conductor for a year. He went into the bakery business with a partner and after a year the partner left with their money. Harvy then went to work for Swindell Stg. Co. which was later bought by Geo. K. Taylor. Harvey managed the company in Jackson for forty years. Kate was a sharp, capable lady who as I remember, was a strong Republican. She suffered for many years with arthritis, but remained a cheerful, knowledgeable woman. |
