_synopsis

This proposal was prepared in response to the client brief and evaluation of the current RMIT School of Architecture and Design. Numerous world-wide precedence of universities offering architecture and design were also analysed and applied as seen fit.

•First and foremost, the aim of this design proposal is create a learning environment which fosters integration and communication between students. This is primarily achieved through the design of a space for a drop-in, studio-based pedagogical model.

•Studio spaces are to be inserted within student working/lounging areas which evokes a informal interaction between formal classes and  informal peer learning. This is emphasised when the flexible spaces are opened up to allow circulation between formal and informal learning spaces.

•The design is to reflect the identity of the school through modern and environmentally sustainable design. The design is to stand out from its immediate context, but relate to the city axis grid from the shrine of remembrance.

•Within the design, the public are encouraged to permeate through and engage with the lower public areas of the building. This initiates an informal interaction with the wider community. The adoption of cafes on the ground level is a reflection of Melbourne’s café culture which ultimately encourages interaction with the school from the general public, especially the office workers from Swanston street and Victoria parade.

•The integration of outdoor spaces within the from are to encourage students to experience the outdoors while studying. These spaces need to be easily accessible and inviting. Providing staff and students with protected ‘pockets’.
