Isle of Barra - Coastal Circular A great cycling island for beaches - a few hills too! If you are arriving in Barra from Oban you'll probably be cycling down the Cal-Mac gangplank around 8pm and the immediate need will be to find a bed. The tourist office (01871 810336) opens to meet the ferry but if you want an economical B&B it might be best to book first. There is an independent hostel in Castlebay: Dunard Hostel (01871 810443), it's two minutes cycle from the ferry terminal. There are several hotels, and shops in Castlebay.
Benbecula - North Uist Some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe so don't rush through too quickly. Benbecula is not quite as pretty as the other islands but there is a lovely little loop you can do on the island of Grimsay just north of it. The settlement of Baile Mhanaich in Benbecula (Balivanich on older maps) has a good choice of shops and places to buy food.
Leverburgh (Harris) - Tarbert (Harris) Vast sandy beaches, flowers of the machair, a bike ride you won't forget. Possibly the best place to arrive in Harris is at Leverburgh. Called after soap magnate Lord Leverhulme, it's nothing special, but you will have come from North Uist via lovely Berneray. Ahead on the west is a vast stretch of shell sand: Scarista Beach. The road on the west coast of South Harris is not too hilly, running through the machair. You pass the island of Taransay, recently the site for the BBC television programme 'Castaway'.
