Margaretha Magdalena "Margaret" MANN, born 14 May 1835, Losau, Kronach, Oberfranken, Bavaria (Bayern), Germany, daughter of George and Margaretha Magdalena (KUFFNER) MANN . (See Chapter 2) She died 6:00 P.M., Wednesday, 20 Sep 1905 at her home in German Ridge, Perry County, Indiana. She was 70 years, 4 months and 6 days old. Buried 35 years to the day she went to Perry County. The funeral was conducted at St. John�s Evangelical Church and burial was in the church grave yard there in German Ridge. She was buried with her 2nd husband, John MAIER.
Margaret married 1st John LEISTNER. He was killed by horses running away with the wagon.
Margaret married 2nd Johann Peter �John� MAIER 6 Oct 1870, Perry County, Indiana. (Note: Margaret was listed as Margaretha MANN when she married John.) He was born 6 Aug 1826, Bechtheim, Hessen, (Hesse, Darmstadt) Prussia (Germany), the son of Johannes and Elisabeth Barbara (HELEBLING) MAYER/MAIER. He died in German Ridge, Perry County, Indiana, United States of America. John�s first wife was Katherine WAGNER, whom he married in 1856, German Ridge, Perry County, Indiana.

Margarette was born in Bairen. With them were children John D. age 21; Fredrick age 20; Elizabeth age 18; Catherine age 14; Margaret age 13; Anna age 9; Linna age 6; and Henry age 3. John immigrated in 1852. John was a farmer. They had been married 30 years. Margaret had given birth to 3 children, with 3 living. John owned his farm free of mortgage. With them were their children: Lennie age 25, born Apr 1875, IN; and Henry 23, born Nov 1876, IN.
John and Margaret lived their entire lives together in German Ridge.

Lizzie married John SCHMERWITZ 21 Jun 1877, Perry County, Illinois. He was born 1846/47, Ohio. His parents were born in Bavaria. He died young. (Note: Lizzie was listed as Lizzie MANN when she married.)

On 30 Apr 1930, the census shows the widowed Lizzie SCHMERWITZ age 72 living in Anderson Township, Perry County, Indiana. With her were her children John age 52; and Loueas age 48. Louise did housekeeping for another family. They owned their home.

Mary Paulena "Lena" LEISTNER, born 15 May 1888, Spencer County, Indiana, daughter of Fred and Elizabeth (LEISTNER) SCHMERWITZ. Lena died Oct 1969. Last place of residence was Tell City, Perry County, Indiana. (Note: Her name on her social security is Pauline SANDAGE.)
Lena married Daniel P. SANDAGE 1901/02. He was born Dec 1878, Indiana, son of J. D. and Lavina (___?___) SANDAGE. He died between 1910 and 1920, Perry County, Indiana. (Note: Lena was listed as Lena M. SCHMERWITZ when she married.)
On 5 May 1910, the census shows Daniel (29) and Lena (23) SANDAGE living in Troy Township, Perry County, Indiana. With them were their children L. Pearl age 6; Zelda D. age 3; and Dewie K. age 5 months. Dan was a farm laborer. They were renting their home. The census said that Lena had given birth to 4 children with one having died before census date.
He died young leaving her with three girls and one boy to raise alone.
On 7 Jan 1920, the census shows the widowed Paulina SANDAGE age 32 living in Tell City, Perry County, Indiana. With here were her children Pearl age 15; Zelda age 12; Dewey age 10; and Mabel age 7. They owned their home with a mortgage. Pearl was working at the Woolen Mill to help support the family. She was only 15. (Note: This mill closed in 1953.)
On 16 Apr 1930, the census shows the widowed Pauline SANDAGE age 42, living at 821 Eleventh Street, Tell City, Troy Township, Perry County, Indiana. With her were her children Zelda D. age 22; Andrew Dewey age 20; and Mabel L. age 17. They owned their home, valued at $1,700.00. They owned a radio. Lena was 15 when she married. Lena took in washing at her home. Zelda worked at the furniture factory. Dewey worked in an office at a factory.

Magdalena "Lena" MAIER, born 25 Apr 1874, German Ridge, Tobin Township, Perry County, Indiana, daughter of Johann Peter and Margaretha Magdalena (MANN)(LEISTNER) MAIER. She died 16 May 1951, Welborn Hospital, Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana. She was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Tell City, Perry County, Indiana.
Aunt Lena was confirmed into the German-Evangelical Church on Deer Creek.

On 5 Jan 1920, the census shows Lena MAIER age 45 living in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana. She was listed as a servant in the Annie C. MAYER Household.
On 29 Sep 1925, Aunt Lena wrote this letter to my grandmother, Beatrice (MERTEN) FRAKES, "Evansville, Ind--Sep 29, 1925--Dear Beatrice, how are you, I must write you a few lines this very evening to let you know that we got home all right sunday morning six Oclock to Evansville. Bro & wife did not have very much time to spare for to go on the other train for Cannelton for there home, I have not heard from them yet so far I hope they got htere. It has rained so much saturday ngiht here and sunday and it staormed here They say and It rained on the way most of the time I was very tirred and am still. Takes quite a while to get over such a trip I never care to go at night seems to me It is harder on a person. Sister Lizzie and I staid at CHAMIERS sunday and Monday. Monday Evening I came back home again to my job again, and did Floid stay with you a while I gess They are all gone to There places again he must take care of him self yet. I wished I could had a paper from Salem that had the death of sisters I for got to say anny thing about it out there to you, If It is no trouble to send one I wish to have one If you please. I was going to aske so many questions that I wanted to know but di dnot get to do it times are so short a person has no time to think well I hope this finds you both well and getting along well you have such a nice & handy husband I know you will get along and so many good Friends that lie is worth living. well so long write some time. My love to you bouth, Lena" (Note: I tried to type the letter just as it was written. A lot of mispelled words and punctuation makes it hard to read, but her hand writing was very nice.)
On 1 Dec 1932, Aunt Lena wrote this letter to my grandmother, Beatrice (MERTEN) FRAKES, "Evansville, Ind--Dec 1, 1932--Dear Beatrice, your letter rec was very much suprised to hear from you and that you where quarintine so long that shure was what you call a short (?) and a home to with the chlidren you can be glad that you have some one that lives in the house with you well where there are children there is all ways some thing that comes along that you don't like you have had quite lots of trouble to go through with but where there are children you can expect it. They will get everything comes along. I hope oyu are all right again you are the main one that sees to every thing & you can't be spaired so take care of your self to and ware worm clothes. I think out there is so much colder than here, and how is Mrs. Paul and her little girl and ever one I know has. The Chief of Police got ther baby you never said you don't live so close now so Mr. FRAKES has him a way a long time he shure gets away so much I gess. The boys gets lonesome to see him . Well hope you all get all right ever one and Billie will have a long gime to go to school yet. Well I have him feeling fine & work all day I wish some day I would have not so much to do are have a small house To day I hve him washing windowes & cleaning a pantry one as large you know like you had one in the Farm and cook Three meales a day & wash all The dishes & The dog is gone It seems to me The weeks just fly for me, I get to see Bertha some times and she says to same with her. I have not seen her for over a week or two. They have a new cook again and that takes all her spare time to help her along she has got her a new coat & dress in black this time I will wait Till after Christmas for a coat. They will be cheaper. I have a warm coat to do me I want a sport coat. I had me a new plate of teath made I broke my others I had and had one thooth pulled to so I had that all done now & I were glad to takes (?) a while to get used to the New Teeth and had one filled. So I am all right for a whil are for all times everybody well here only the men here still idle hope times will soon get better so manny out of work here but not so bad like some other places. Farmers dont get enny thing for there stuff. I had a letter from Jane and she said Anna has about 60 or more Turkeys but they dont bring much she thought 4 cents I dont know how manny she sold for Thanksgiving we had a goose for that day we will have a turkey for xmas I get tirred of so much meat. I am sending you a picture of my self I hd some taken about four years ago right after Mrs. Myers died I had gone up home and Mildred took some and that is at Mrs BELLVILLES house Mildred sister The oldest sister at Cannelton and you see there dog some day I will send you some better ones and the other two Bertha taken while she was out there she gave me those she thought she had send you some you can have them. lovet to one & all aunt Lena" (Note: Again I tried to type the letter just as it was written.)
Aunt Lena was a nurse. She was greatly loved by her nieces and nephews.
Aunt Lena never married.
Aunt Lena lived most of her life in Evansville, Indiana.
