Temperature control for crystal growth progressed. Eventually I developed skills for controlled growth of crystals at body temperature. It became obvious that I had to study the behavior of the water from which the crystals were being grown. At first I was concerned with the purity of the water and then with the additives of salts that were present in body fluid. The entire study was an adventure in stereo chemistry. | When I am 10 years old, Pearl Harbor was bombed on December 7, 1941. My father George Buckel was a gage designer for tool and die at General Motors. At home, I remember foreign visitors from Switzerland who were speaking German. There were also men in military uniform. On one such occasion, I heard my father tell one of those men that I was going to be a physicist. Since I was only 10 years old and had no idea what it meant, I spoke up at once to assure everyone that I was not going to be a physicist.
