There is a pull down ladder in the attic that goes up to the Widow’s Walk. George created the Widow’s Walk in the style of period homes along the New England states. Many men made their living on the sea as fishermen, merchants, transporters and whalers. Their wives would go up to their rooftop decks to watch for their husbands’ ships to return home. This gave them time to ready the evening meal to celebrate their safe return. Casualties were such that they often did not return, thus being called “Widow’s Walks”. You will note that in the upstairs hallway by a model ship is a hand held telescope of the type used then to spot ships in the distance. During the holidays we have a lighted star that we mount on the Widow’s Walk.
The Basement
The full basement is as large as the first floor except for the additions. It is very easy to get lost down there!
