Level 3 : The candidate describes how the enquiry process can be improved by questioning how reliability of the methods used to collect the data have affected the accuracy of the results and the validity of conclusions.
Put simply; You have to evaluate Methods How good was your method of data collection? Could the method have been improved? Are there other methods of collecting the same data? Results How accurate are your results? How reliable are your results? Did you collect enough results to give a clear picture of what was happening? Conclusions Are your conclusions valid? Are they backed up by the evidence you collected? Do other sources of evidence support your conclusions?
Hypothesis 1 The river, its channel and its valley get wider as you travel downstream. Methods - simple measuring using a tape measure, possibility of human error, main difficulty was deciding where the valley sides met the valley floor. Results - more measurements from more sites would give a clearer picture, if time had been available. Accuracy greatest when measuring the width of a river as there were two definite points to measure between. Conclusions - generally the pattern fits the hypothesis, but the kite graph shows an anomally, site 1 is wider than expected. Can this be explained? (Softer rock below the waterfall, river meandering so some lateral erosion) If so then the hypothesis is still valid. More results from more sites and from other rivers would help to confirm the conclusion.
