Last entry: Men's Night
This was the first time I have gone to the Kansas City Filmmakers Jubilee but I hope to make it a new tradition. This year was the 6th Annual event and I only ended up going because my friend and co-worker Martha had a friend who was the producer for one of the films being shown. So She,I and another friend of her's Susan, got together for dinner and to see two sets of the movies playing.  The festival was playing in a number of theaters in town but we decided to see two shows with two shorts and a feature leangth film each which were playing back to back at the Tivoli Theatre in Westport. The Tivoli is an art house theater in the Westport old town district which is full of bars restaurants and small specialty shops.  So we started the night by having dinner at McCoys a restaurant across the street from the theatre. Both Martha and her friend Susan are delightful conversationalist and we ended up spending more time talking than we did eating.  Before we knew it we were running late and had to wolf down the rest of our food. By the time we got to the theater we had missed most of the first short. The next two in the set and all three in the second set were very good. The one produced by Martha's friend ended up being quiet cute ending with a great dance number. The last and longest movie in the first set was very well done as were they all, but was for me a little disturbing. It hit on several themes that were a little close to home, topped with the fact that it was actually filmed in my home town.  The second set of films, which encluded Martha's friend's film, also contained a documentry on Strippers. Along with being quite intersting it ended up being very sad and we were all quite somber when the lights came back up.  The director and writer of the film was on hand for questions afterward and by the time she finished all of our spirits had risen.
We ended the night by walking back down to the Country Club Plaza in search of a drink. We were shocked to find that though it was only a litttle after 12:30 almost all of the restaurants on the plaza were closed. The first two we found open were so loud we couldn't hear ourselves think. We finally found a place that was still open but no sooner had we sat down than last call was announced. At this point we were tired of trying and after one drink decided to call it a night.
ciao
