It always surprises me after spending a couple of weekends at home, how much you can squeeze into a weekend when you try.  Or even how much you can squeeze into a day.

Originally I had volunteered to photograph the first major swim meet to take place here in KC sponsored by the KC Wave, Charles' swim team, but was later asked by Charles if I wouldn't mind volunteering to be a timer instead. Well if what they need most is people to time the swimmers how could I say no.  So early Saturday morning Charles stopped by to pick me up to go out to Independence where the swim meet was being held. In the car with him was his houseguest for the weekend, an expatriate Brit from Chicago. From what little time we spent together he seemed very nice. One of the problems with these weekend meets is that the time is usually so filled that you don't really have time to get to know new people very well.

The pool where the meet was held was very nice, part of one of the high schools there in Independence.  From what I have seen none of the schools here in the city proper have anything compared to it. That is one of the pitfalls of not being a suburbanite.  The meet went well and every one seemed to have a good time.  There were a couple of extra guys there that were set to be timer relief's so I gave them the camera and told them to shoot away. Between what they took and the shots I got when I had time we were able to get some good images.
That evening one of the guys from the team hosted a great party. When Charles first invited me to join them at this barbeque my first thought was one of those neighborhood out door cookouts on a simple grill.  boy was I wrong. He had hired a chef who cooks on one of those portable smokers and had a great spread. The evening was beautiful and he had done a great job in setting up for the party. His yard had ample tables and chairs a couple of party tents for shade a outdoor fire and to top things off a he had hired a really good Jazz Trio to play in the background. The jazz trio included a guitarist, which is rare in a KC trio but is my favorite jazz instrument. All of the visitors kept commenting on how good everything was and we locals kept telling them that yes he did a great job and that Barbeque and Jazz are two of the things for which Kansas City is famous. All and all it made for a long but enjoyable day.

Ciao
