| This past weekend Andy and I decided to try to get some of our Christmas/Hanukkah shopping done. He picked me up first thing Sunday morning and we went back to Overland Park to get started. Our first stop and longest was Target. I must admit that I love this store. This is not a high priced department store or a fancy boutique it is a couple of steps above wal-mart but contains similar merchandise just at a higher quality. Their things in both men's clothing and house wares is both more fashionable and more stylish than either Wal-mart or G-d forbid K-mart. I had just been there a couple of weeks before so I has some idea of what they currently had in stock and what I wanted. More than wanting to get actual holiday gifts I wanted to pick up ornaments for my tree/bush. I have been collecting ornaments for my Christmas tree since I was a child but in the last few years have decided that I wasn't going to celebrate both Christmas and Hanakkah at the same time but was going to alternate years when I was going to celebrate them. What is a jew doing celebrating Christmas you may be asking your self. Well if I have never explained before my parents are Christian, black baptist to be exact. I specify black baptist because the baptist tradition as practiced by the large majority of blacks in my expierience, is different that how Anglo-Americans for the most part celebrate it both the "Baptist" and the Southern-Baptist" that I know. Though many of my siblings have converted to other denominations (one even is a Muslim) the family traditions are American Christian. Those traditions especially the Holiday traditions are part of some of my fondest memories from my childhood and I enjoy continuing them as an adult. So as I was saying I now celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah on alternatng years. This year I will be celebating Hanukkah. Fortunately for me having a decorated bush is now a tradition among some american jews. Even if it weren't I would try to incorperate it into my personal celebration. Though I have been collecting Christmas ornaments for years I only have a few that are specificly Hanukkah ornaments and I wanted to but up my tree/bush. So I needed to get more that were fitting for Hanukkah. I had decided to put most of the ornaments that I have that are not spicificly Christian in design, those that represent winter as in sleds and snowmen and those that represent gift giving like toys and wrapped packages. Even with all those I would be lacking a cohesive look to the bush and though I have some Hanukkah ornaments they wouldn't be enough to make the difference recognizable. So I wanted to get some balls and things in the color theme of blue and white/silver. I had written this long diatribe about the shopping trip but proceeded to delete it by accedent so I am goning to try to duplicate it. So Andy came by on Sunday morning, picked me up and we headed back to Overland Park. Our first stop was at Target, one of my favorate stores. It isn't a high end department store or boutique but is more on the line of a better grade Wal-mart. I can easily spend hours in there. Andy forgot his shopping list and had to go back home to get it. It was an hour long trip there and back so I decided to get most of my shopping done while he was gone. As I said the main target of this trip was to get ornaments for my Hanakkah bush and I quickly got that done I then tackeled the remainder of my list getting gifts for my friends. I had origanilly planned on having a simple gift exchange and just buy an ornament for each of my friends. Something nice that I thoguht reflected them. The last few years besides a gift I had been buying my closest friends ornaments. I would pick something out that I thought that we would all like and get one for each of us. I have in the past did the eight gifts for each thing. Something for each night of Hanakkah usually seven small and practical things and one large gift and found that about half way through the process that I was completely out of the spirit and just buying to get it done. Because of that experience I determained that I wiould not be doing that again. But low and behold this year when I got started I found that not only did I had over the past year thought of enough things for each but that I also really wanted to get some specific things for specific people and that the ornaments were the least of them. The main deciding factor was this sweater that I saw and really thought would be perfect for Charles. I have seen this sweater around alot this winter and new that first off I would love it but unfortunately it only looks good on those who are in great shape. Currently that doesn't enclude me. Once I saw the sweater on Andy when we went to the opera I knew that this was one garment that would be great on Charles. He and I have simular taste, it is something that he would love but most likely would not go out and get for himself. While at Target I saw a couple of other things that would be perfect for different people and decided to go for it. I'm afraid that once again I might regret having gotten started. I know have most of the gifts but have been unable to find any ornaments that speak to me. Over the weekend I am going to head over to Dillards to see what they have. I've checked my normal haunts for ornaments. Hall's the Halmark owned department store here in town and Sac's Fifth Avenu both of which are here on the Plaza. After I try Dillards I may have to venter further afield to find what I am looking for. |
