Lesson Plan

 

INTRODUCTION

The information for this lesson plan was gathered on a study tour of the northwestern United States by a group of Arkansas teachers during the summer of 2001.  The graduate course from Harding University was in cooperation with the Arkansas Geographic Alliance and Wilbur D. Mills Education Cooperative.

 

OBJECTIVES

Students will gain knowledge of significant geographic features of the northwest region of the United States.

Students will recognize spectacular geographic features of the northwest region of the United States.

Students will locate specific geographic features on a map of the United States.

 

LEVEL

Grades 4 through 12.

 

MATERIALS

Outline maps of the United States

United States Atlas

 Internet links and resources 

METHODS

Students will gain knowledge of geographic features of the northwest region by viewing photographs and descriptions of the features.  This can be done individually or in small groups.  Students will  locate specific significant geographic features in an atlas and will plot them on individual or group outline maps.

EXTENSIONS

Students may continue to utilize information. They can make a travel brochure, design a t-shirt, make bookmarks, or make a photo map by downloading pictures of geographic features and matching them with corresponding locations.
