General:
George Howell was sentenced at Staffordshire 18 8 1800 for stealing a bay Gelding. The sentence was death. He was reprieved to transported for life. He sailed from Spithead 12 Feb 1802 on "Persue" arrived in Sydney 4 August 1802. George was oversee of Govt Wheelrights at Parramatta for 6 years. After becomming free by emancipation he built no fewer than 5 mills, one prior to 1823 costing more than 600 pounds and one in 1824 costing 3000 pounds. From the 1828 census he was a landholder at Richmond of 40 acres cleared and cultivated, with 10 horses and 27 cattle and 1 sheep.

George (owle),late of the parish of Gnosall,staffordshire labourer convicted at stafford assizes 13 Aug 1800 of stealing one bay gelding worth 40 shillings of the goods and chattels of James Bradshaw (ASS5/120part5) or this version- according to the local newspaper,George Owle(sic) aged23 was tried on AUG13 1800 having been committed on16 june with stealing a bay gelding from James Bradshaw of Knightley he was condemned to death later commuted to transportation for life.
