Trying to Concieve Boy
As stated in the Shettles summary on the previous page, it is more likey that the Y sperm are to reach and fertilize the egg at or near when intercourse occurs at or near the time of ovulation. Thus making it important to time intercourse as close to ovulation as possible when ttc boy. First you must learn how to pinpoint ovulation. The most common way to do this is by charting your BBT. There are also other ways to do this including checking your cm, cp, and using OPK's. For more in depth information on charting your cycles I would reccomend buying the book 'Taking Charge of Your Fertility'. This book will explain in depth how to pinpoint ovulation. Shettles reccomends charting your cycles for a least 3 months prior to ttc so you are familiar with your body and when you ovulate. He also reccomends waiting at least 6 months before ttc if coming off birth control pills. This is to make sure your body regulates itself making ovulation easier to pinpoint. Once you've learned to pinpoint ovulation you can begin making your attempt for a boy. Timing intercourse 12-24 hours prior to ovulation is ideal. But it is important not to wait to have intercourse after you ovulate because your cervical mucus changes back to acidic making if more favorable to the stronger X sperm. It is also reccomended having sex only once during your attempt to ensure timing.
Dr.Shettles reccomends sexual abstinence from the beginning of the cycle until the day upon sex selection is attempted. The reasoning behind this was that higher sperm counts have been associated with a higher incidence of male offspring. By abstaining from sex until the target date, Dr, Shettles reasoned, the husband's sperm count would be maximal. If you cannot abstain for this long is is essential to use condoms during intercourse so not to fall into "girl timing". 3-4 days abstinence prior to your boy attempt is minimal to build up sperm count.
Men who wear tight-fitting clothing (such as jockey shorts and jockstraps) run the risk of raising their body temperature within the testes to the point where sperm count is reduced. So it is important for men to "keep it cool"

It is also noted that a strong dose of caffeine such as coffee can also help you to concieve a boy. Having your husband drink a couple strong cups of coffee 15-30 minutes prior to intercourse may impart some extra speed to the Y sperm. Researchers have shown that caffeine can have a stimulating effect on the sperm. Other caffeinated sources are fine. But it is not reccomended intake of caffeine for a long-term use. This can actually have the opposite effect - lowering the sperm count.

Since alkaline conditions are more favorable to Y-producing sperm Dr. Shettles suggests acheiving an orgasm during intercourse. If at all possible, you should try to acheive an orgasm at the same time, or better yet,  just before the male orgasm. Female orgasm usually increases the quantity and flow of the natural alkaline secretions that arise close to the time of ovulation.
Two more factors favor male conception. The man should try for deep penetration at the time of his climax. This will help the man deposit the sperm closet to the cervix, where secretions are  are more favorable to the Y sperm. Penetration from the rear also ensures the deepest penetration and deposit of sperm near the opening of the cervix.
Another way to help make your vaginal tract more alkaline and more favorable to boy sperm is to use a baking soda douche just prior to intercourse. Shettles no longer reccomends this but believes it can help women who are naturally acidic. The douche typically uses about two tablespoons of baking soda mixed thoroughly with a quart of warm water.
