Pumping Techniques

In order to condition a letdown:

* Arrange to use the pump where there
is privacy.
* Sit in a comfortable chair.
* Have a picture of the baby.
* Make a tape recording of the baby's sounds to listen to while pumping.
* Having a routine often helps letdown occur.

Techniques:

* Wash hands.
* Get comfortable.
* Massage the breast.
* Express a few drops of milk by hand.
* Moisten the pump flange for a better seal.
* Secure the flange on the breast.
* Begin pumping with the suction on the lowest setting.
* Provide only the amount of suction needed to maintain milk flow throughout a session.
* Increase the suction strength gradually as needed.
* When single pumping (one breast only):
* Alternate between both breasts several times throughout a pumping session to capitalize on the multiple letdowns that occur simultaneously.
* Pump for 5-7 minutes on the first breast and repeat that time on the second breast.
* Return to the first breast for 3-5 minutes and repeat that time on the second breast.
* Finish on the first breast for 2-3 minutes and repeat that time on the second breast.
* When double pumping, 12-15 minutes total pumping time should be sufficient.
