Reflecting telescopes are among the most popular of instruments used in amateur and professional astronomy. Reflectors are constructed with mirrors, instead of lenses, and therefore, reflectors can be made to much larger sizes than REFRACTORS. This, however, gives the telescope less power per inch, but they conpensate by giving more light per square inch, thus giving a very clear picture. The first reflector was made in 1668 by Issac Newton. Reflectors are also much cheaper to buy than Reflectors, because the mirrors dont have to be as perfect and finely cut as lenses of a refractor. Reflectors are never usually made to have a main mirror of below 4", becasue this is too downgrading to the light levels. A typical amature reflector will have an apature of around 6"+, making them powerful instruments indeed. The largest telescope in the world is a reflector, it had a main mirror of 5m diameter. |
